Is it better to live blindly in love or always brace for the fall?

Gaslighting, love bombing, codependency. These words have appeared in our lexicon over the past decade, and they get thrown around a lot. When you go on a date, get into a new relationship, or go through a breakup, these words pop up in your head at every step of the way. Is being this aware robbing us of our happiness?

Pete Lee, perpetual people pleaser and prolific stand-up comedian, remotely sat down on the Our Official Intelligence podcast to drop some truth bombs about love. He believes there are two ways to live: living in fear or living in love. The question is, is it better to live blindly through love and get hurt than to protect yourself from the fall?

“If you’ve ever listened to any love song, you would say that person is codependent.”

Romeo and Juliet (1996)

Let’s recall some of the most popular love songs over the past 20 years. “How Do I Live Without You” by Leann Rimes, “As Long as You Love Me” by the Backstreet Boys, “No Air” by Jordan Sparks. In each of these songs, and a vast majority of the songs in the Top 40, the singers describe a love that they can’t breathe without the other person, couldn’t live without them. These songs are not condemned for being “codependent” but rather they are praised.

You can say that these people are in the “Honeymoon Phase” or you could simply call them delusional, but in all honesty, they are happy. If you’ve ever tried to burst someone’s love bubble, you may find that it is almost impossible. This is not because “love is blind” — although it sometimes feels like it — but because they make the choice to love for themselves.

Love is Blind

Why are we so afraid of love? We fear that the high we feel means we are doomed to fall. If we believe we are doomed to fall no matter what, and we are bound to get hurt no matter how much worrying and preparation we do, then wouldn’t it be better to enjoy the free fall? Happiness is always an option. All you must do is choose it.
